Radial columns are true Process columns. Easy to scale up, robust and reliable.
Downside of the Radial Column geometry is its difficulty to scale down without conflict in relative dimensions, I/O-ratio and hydrodynamic properties.
Solution was found in the development of the "segment columns".
These strange looking columns offer similar hydrodynamics, identical ratio and identical relative dimensions. Hence segment columns may look strange but are in fact a perfect mimic of the larger HP-RFC column they are derived from.
It is simply a "piece of the full cake" and working with it really helps to get a good understanding of al process parameters (just a piece of cake).
A process developed on a segment column can be transferred to its HP-RFC counterpart on a 1:1 basis. An SOP writen based on column volume is transferred without modification.
This holds true for the Chromatographic performance as well as the Packing behaviour.
